Athletes, sponsorship and sustainability. Now is the right moment to speak loud



As the world faces the greatest environmental catastrophe in human history, it’s time for athletes to use their influence to protect our planet. Athletes have public voices, immense public platforms and hundreds of millions of fans around the world.


One of the things that it's important for anyone to have in their mind as they look at sponsorship is to be stated as an athlete or a brand is that you're not going to get everything you want. You're not going to get all of the things you want out of a sponsorship or an agreement. You do need to understand what your brand's values are, what are their policies and procedures and goals, what are the qualities that they want from this relationship?


We should be passionate about environmental sustainability, who wants to do more than just talk about it. Athletes who take on the issue and speak out of their experience carry a lot of weight on their shoulders. A trend towards activism has not only been confirmed, but celebrated by the public. People are willing to welcome athletes who have a voice that they are not afraid to use.


Let’s use the right platform and the right method to improve the system itself. Leagues, teams, stakeholders, fans, athletes, they all need to be aligned on the same target.
